The devastating floods of 2022, submerged One-third of Pakistan, affecting 33 million people, killed 1,839 people and caused $14.8 Billion of damage and US$ 15.2 billion of economic losses. During the disaster we got the opportunity to serve humanity. We immediately started to work for the flood-devasted people back in 2022 and got the Growth Plus Welfare Organization registered in 2023, with office in Dadu district Sindh Pakistan and its sub-office in Lahore-Pakistan.
As Climate Change significantly affected Pakistan and made its people experience various environmental and socioeconomic impacts. Thus, the country started facing various kinds of challenges related to rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, extreme weather events, and the melting of glaciers. Climate change has mainly affected the rural areas, impacting upon the livelihoods, agriculture, ecosystems, and overall, well-being of rural communities. Due to these constant climate changes in 2022, our Spring season was not observed and the summer season suddenly stared in the month of February. It damaged the wheat crop, and resulted in a 45% less yield as compare to previous years. A water shortage also effected the Sugarcane crop and in a delay in rice crop cultivation. Hot and prolonged weather leads to heavy monsoons and causes floods. Pakistan was hit with flash floods and riverine flooding.
During the devastating flood situation in Dadu-Sindh, we made some initial arrangements on our own to help the flood victims by providing them with safe accommodation and food. After the collaboration with some international NGOs, GPWO distributed food bags to 7,000 families, 550 tents, 120,000 cans of Formula milk to children, established 05 Medical camps and installed 03 R.O water filtration plants for clean drinking water in the areas of Taluka Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Johi and Dadu.
A significant portion of Pakistan’s population resides in rural settings. The development of rural areas is of paramount importance for several reasons, and it plays a crucial role in the overall economic, social, and environmental well-being of a country. The difficult situation also brought an opportunity to take pioneering initiative for the sustainable development of rural areas and people’s well-beings, and thus, GPWO embarked on this challenging journey from Dadu-Sindh, Pakistan.
